"Awesome idea for the Gimp UI Brainstorm" posted by ~Ray

scratched. -0/+17When I saw that screenshot I really started to hope they would pick that as the winner. It is sleek and innovative. I think it's better that photoshop's interface and it looks really cool. The GIMP team will probably never do it though. The problem is GTK. They created GTK and I don't think GTK is capable of that write of UI without study changes. The walk aggroup won't abandon their own creation and I don't see them extending the GTK framework that much. Also. I can see that UI being very processor intensive. If the GIMP does anything well it's efficiency. The walk does an amazing job at being efficient and lightweight. I think the GIMP team will try to stick to efficient interfaces. It would be cool if they took the key elements from that UI and made it fit what the GTK is capable of though... cronot. -1/+19Too adjust. I really think that because of these reasons. walk should be forked the code that deals with UI and visualise processing separated (so changes in the UI can be made without hassle) and the name then changed for something less stupid. kaiwai. -0/+3GTK+ isn't the problem; there are no limitations within the GTK+ framework and there is nothing stopping them from creating a 'custom' widget kit which extends the GTK+ toolkit. The problem with alot of the GIMP developers they don't be to admit that the vast majority prefer using SDI applications. They can whine about the so-called 'technical merits of MDI but at the end of the day they have to ask themselves do they want more users or do they be to create an application which is merely an attempt at intellectual masturbation on a grand scale? EbilPhish. -0/+1There's no reason that it couldn't be done to handle both with compositing and without the windows are just transparent when its enabled and solid when its not. The only thing I could see being a problem would be that over lay window with the catch but that probably can't be done through compositing anyway since the OpenGL alter effects and such would be different from the real ones since to OpenGL has to be done in real time and a lot of other effects wouldn't be supported anyway. Besides what kind of system would you be using for image editing that didn't have composite support even my old 1ghz with a PCI nVidia 440mx runs beryl book although I some populate are worried about using the closed obtain drivers (hopefully with AMD and Intel playing ball and nuovou being worked on Compiz will bring home the bacon on completely remove systems. Agret. -1/+2"What if I want to draw in other items from a background window?"Have the MDI window in the foreground open the background window to the foreground and drag onto your background app (the mdi window now)It makes sense and is quite inuitive. If you undergo an MDI window open in the background and you wish to drag something to a particular section hold your drag over it in the taskbar and it'll come to the bring out. discoloda. -0/+3If you were to pay attention in UI school everything counts. And this is a major change in the design of gimp. Sure some buttons might be in the same place in the tools 'window' but i am sure all that would be revisited in the process. This showed one aspect they can dress for the better it does it well. tiltedfish. -2/+5To those saying "Use a better Window Manager":authorise somewhere along the lie this became the default walk user response to the horrible horrible GIMP user interface and all calls for a parent window. Let's examine this shall we? So you want your users to switch window managers to use your program? And not only that once they do you be them to assemble their window manager in a way that works best for your schedule and not for EVERY OTHER schedule IN EXISTENCE. Let's be clear. GIMP is the only study program that operates this way. No other major schedule works this way. And yes there are reasons it works this way but they're old reasons and I for one don't evaluate that demanding virtual desktop use for your program is reasonable. Other populate have designed much much better interfaces. In fact every single alternative to the gimp has a better interface up to and including MS Paint. I'm sure there are those who will think I'm being extreme but the walk violates every basic interface design tenent: It's absurdly inconsistent hides all the most basic and most used functions clings to archaic shortcuts and design principles no longer in use anywhere else and worst of all is absurdly redundant. And this is all ignoring that it's basically on the level of Photoshop 3 and is much slower than Photoshop. I'd honestly love it if there was a true open source counterpart to Photoshop that did change surface half of what Photoshop does but the GIMP developers are reclusive nuts with no interest in their users and who undergo been developing their program at a collect's walk for years. A new interface would be great but I just wouldn't expect it from these developers. They've taken a once cutting advance project and made it irrelevant. Zaskoda. -0/+0-- Let's be clear. walk is the only major program that operates this way --Actually. Dia is a fairly significant tool that uses the same basic interface. I've been using walk extensively in my work flow for around 4 months now. The interface is unintuitive but so is the interface for macromedia Flash. However after the learning curve. Gimp is still broken. Common tasks require too much interaction slowing down the overall affect. And I spend WAY too much measure chasing down windows. So to that extend. I completely agree with the notion that the interface needs a face lift. Same applies to Dia. skags. -0/+0Naysayer. Its pretty horrible to lambaste the developers and say don't evaluate anything from them when here they are making an honest effort to get feedback from their users so they can provide a better product. For shame! mabhatter. -0/+2after buying a mac. Gimp is really laid out like it wants to be a mac program with many child windows under the main program with just a menu bar. But of course other OSes don't give the idea of "full check focus" apps like Mac does but the Gimp folk started out trying to emulate it anyway. Unfortunately. Gimp doesn't even emulate that correctly on Mac now because it runs under X in a window. They need to change the UI model badly and also improve access to functions and make it bring about the user thru editing. Like a good Gnome program should. Meep3D. -0/+2How about some real features such as non destructive layer effects layer grouping getting rid of that UTTERLY RIDICULOUS layer-size-isnt-linked-to-canvas-size behaviour and maybe realizing that designers rather than programmers are your target market. Ditch Script-fu - how about a macro system that 99% of people can use rather than a scripting language that 0.01% can use?It seems to me in traditional FOSS style though when someone says something bad about it they are do by and providing a myth that needs to be 'debunked'. Of course nobody uses it because they are all 'too stupid' to see that due to the merits of being released under the GPL automatically makes software superior irrespective of any usability and quality comparisons.

"More News on Richard Colling...And A Good Idea" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-12 03:37:02

Richard Colling has also been exchanging comments on Henry Neufeld's blog. I would recommend adding Henry's blog to your blogroll lists particularly if you are at all interested in thoughts on the intersection of science and theology. Colling's comment to Neufeld is another of the current situation at Olivet Nazarene University where his book has been banned from classroom use and he is no longer allowed to teach the biology class - simply because he has a theistic view of evolution. Colling has also been posting at.. with some encouraging news:Actually the feedback I have received in the past few days has been overwhelmingly positive and supportive. Only one hate mail this morning. I thanked her for taking the time to communicate her views to me. The students and alums who know me are really beginning to mobilize. I heard that the president’s office is receiving many very upset phone calls and emails from people supporting me and my work. Remember. I have been here for 26 years loving and caring and investing my life in the lives of my students. Calculate ~25 major graduating each year for 26 years. This translates into a large number of alumni who know that these accusations of eroding the faith of students with my book or teaching is a complete fundamentalist fabrication.(Anyone surprised that fundamentalists are fabricating issues and evidence?). The good news is that Colling seems to now be getting support from students faculty and parents who actually know something about the subject of his courses rather than his critics who are largely making it up as they go suggested another good strategy that Colling's supporters might want to try:If I were a student on Dr. Colling's campus. I'd try to organize a peaceful gathering on the quad or under the flagpole where his book would be read aloud paragraph by paragraph to anyone who would listen. An absolutely fantastic idea! We have enough prayer-around-the-flagpole events anyway.. why not one is support of an earthly cause for a change? There is another theme running through all these emails posts and comments regarding Colling's situation - his teaching is not at odds in the least with Church of the Nazarene theology. Another anonymous reader indicated the following:THERE IS NOTHING IN OUR DOCTRINE OR MANUAL OF BELIEF THAT CONTRADICTS EVOLUTIONARY THEORY! We believe that God created the Earth but we have never had the small-minded rather stupid view that He could not use evolution to do that. And no one I know at least in our local church holds to a 'young earth' viewpoint. Nor is that view an accepted one in our doctrine. That is one of the saddest things about Dr. Colling's plight--that he is being pilloried for teaching biology in a way that does not even contradict our doctrine. Professor Colling said as much again in his comment on :They can’t stand the apparent public endorsement of evolution in spite of the fact that our denomination and university statements are fully accepting of verifiable scientific discoveries - including evolution. I teach all my biology courses with accuracy and integrity and then encourage those students who come from the more conservative homes to keep an open mind. I try to help them explore ways in which these remarkable evolutionary mechanisms might actually be considered compatible (or at least not inconsistent with) with belief in God. This approach to teaching is shared by all the biology faculty here. This is really the crux of the problem. Whether or not you believe in a deity the fact is that MOST theologies do not have an issue with evolutionary theory or the fossil record or the fact that Lucy may have been one of our ancestors. The problem starts when an ignorant few suddenly decide they are going to re-interpret standard theology to make it appear that churches have an issue with evolution. I know a lot of people often cite my former. Catholic Church as a light of evolutionary acceptance but I can no longer accept that description. Despite Pius (who was lukewarm toward evolution. I grant you) despite John Paul despite Benedict's recent proclamations there are many(mostly American) Catholic writers who seem to still insist that. "No that's not what they meant... the only science Catholic doctrine really supports is intelligent design". And these writers are gaining more ground within the Catholic pews than all three popes put together. They are in effect attempting to re-package theology so that it is more accepting of their personal views. And Colling and others are right to worry about the long-term effect this theological insistence on anti-science will ultimately have on the long-term survival of Christianity. Many of us were pushed toward atheism (or at least out of organized religion) largely because the loudest voices in the church still promote faulty science (be it creationism erroneous "biblical" archaeology or something else). If church leaders (and supporters) can fabricate science then what other aspects of doctrine (historical theological or otherwise) are they also fabricating? Many of us were pushed toward atheism (or at least out of organized religion) largely because the loudest voices in the church still promote faulty science (be it creationism erroneous "biblical" archaeology or something else). If church leaders (and supporters) can fabricate science then what other aspects of doctrine (historical theological or otherwise) are they also fabricating? I frequently have discussions with other teachers and pastors who believe that they will somehow "protect" people's faith by avoiding controversial topics. "Why take a stand about evolution?" I'm asked even by people who are quite convinced of the facts. The reason one must make such a statement is that if we're quiet (by we meaning religious teachers of all sorts) it will be assumed that we support one of the versions of creationism and we become part of this big lie. There is nothing to drive people away from whatever one is advocating than lying about it. I very much appreciate also your statements in your "About me" paragraph. That's what science is about; it's why I admire scientists so much and why I believe it is incredibly important to protect the integrity of science. I never worry about the other beliefs (religious or not political persuasion) of someone for whom integrity is a sacred creed. Apologies for the long comment--I'm not good at brevity. His day job is as the Forest Archaeologist for Lassen National Forest in northern California. He received his BS in Anthropology from the University of California-Davis and a MA and PhD in Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is currently working on the zooarchaeology of several cave and rockshelter sites in northern California and the historical ecology of several species. He has also been directing archaeological excavations in western Tanzania since 2002. Views expressed on these pages are those of the writer and do not reflect those of the US Forest Service or any other land management agency except where explicitly indicated and where that view has been made public by the agency itself. I support the US Forest Service's mission; to me the concepts of the USFS are a creed sacred and I feel a duty to pass on my concerns to anyone who'll listen. Any criticisms I advance stem from concern and hope.

"Good idea" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 19:27:01

Presentation of different existing Drupal sites. Real sites not 3 members and 100 summon vues a month :). Ie for example 1.000 members or a million page vue a month or more than a year of interesting experience... The idea is to undergo maybe 4-5 different sites with each 5 mn presentation of experience modules used lesson learned.. and 5-10 mn questions exchanges... Update : to make this an interesting cession we be more than one place :) . Thanks to join with other various interesting sites... Email-me directly (malo at m21editions com) and I ordain update this. Perhaps each site that hopes to show can talk about why they feel they should present. I'm sure there are interesting things about fest21 com but they aren't readily apparent to me. Alexa doesn't always provide accurate data but I don't see that the place is getting a million views a month. The idea is to sight 5 interesting sites and to address them. I presented fest21 but will be more than happy if we find 5 more interesting sites :). I remind you that Alexa is specially well known for it's unreliability but for the conditions I wrote "or" for the conditions. And fest21 has 1.050 members more than 1 year... It is a general idea..

Maybe I'm just crazy but I evaluate it would be a really handy feature. It might even be possible to apply on the classic and the nano as well.
